We did not have an automated production line running twenty four hours a day. All we had were iron chisels, wooden hammers, and a pair of hands inherited from our ancestors. Hands that our grandfathers once used to carve temple stones, now continuing the same rhythm. That sound never stops. Tak, tak, tak. An eternal echo amidst the puffs of white dust from the belly of Mount Merapi.
In early 2008, we were just a small group of craftsmen. Three people, including myself. We sat cross legged on the red soil, placed stones on our laps, and then carved. One by one. Not in a hurry. Because nature taught us that goodness never comes from rushing. We took stones from the cold lava that flowed after the Merapi eruption the previous year. Those stones were still warm when we held them. Warm from the remnants of fire from deep within the earth. And in our hands, that rough and wild stone began to speak. It said, “Carve me patiently. I will become a floor that accompanies humans for hundreds of years.” We listened.
Not Just Stone. This Is Memory Carved with Prayer.
Every time that old truck arrived carrying black lava stone from the upper slopes of Merapi, we did not cut it immediately. We sat for a while. We observed. We read the story stored in every single pore of the stone. There is a story about a massive eruption hundreds of years ago. There is a story about a blazing lava flow that crept slowly, cooled, and froze into solid rock. There is a story about ash that flew and fell back to the earth. This stone, to us, is not just a building material. It is a silent witness to the journey of the universe.

Have you ever walked barefoot on the floor of Borobudur Temple as the sun just began to rise on the eastern horizon? We have. Not just once, but many times. And every time we do it, we feel something that is difficult to explain with words. Those stones are warm. Not warm because of the scorching sun. Warm because of the energy of humans who have walked on them for over a thousand years. Pilgrims, monks, farmers, travelers from all corners of the world. They all left an invisible trail, but one that can be felt by those who are sensitive.
From there, our philosophy was born. We do not want to imitate the shape of temple stones. We want to imitate their soul. We want the floors we make to also be able to whisper. To store memories. To become silent witnesses to the tears, laughter, and long conversations that happen on top of them. We do not know if we have succeeded. But every time a customer calls us years after their purchase, and says, “The stone floor from you is still strong, Ma’am. Still as beautiful as before,” we feel that those small prayers were heard.
Prambanan Temple also taught us something else. That beauty does not have to be uniform. One relief is different from another. One statue shows a different expression from the statue next to it. From Luxury Resorts in Bali to Hotel Lobbies in Dubai
We never imagined it. Truly, never. In 2010, we were still struggling to sell stones around the village. Sometimes we made a sale, sometimes we did not. But we did not give up. Because we believed in our product. And slowly, the doors of fortune began to open. First, an architect from Bali stopped by our workshop. He was looking for material for hospitality design in Nusa Dua. He wanted something natural, exotic, yet elegant. We showed him our collection of black lava stone. He was silent for a moment, then smiled. “This is it,” he said. “This is what I have been looking for.”
From that moment, orders started pouring in. Not only from Bali, but also from Lombok, Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, even Singapore and Malaysia. We handled commercial design for boutiques in Seminyak. We worked on corporate design for startup offices in South Jakarta that wanted to stand out with natural stone floors. We were also trusted to work on restaurant design in Bandung, industrial design for a premium factory in Sidoarjo, and comfort decoration design for luxury spas in Ubud.
The peak came when a contractor from the United Arab Emirates contacted us. They were building a star rated hotel in Dubai and wanted to use lava stone flooring for the swimming pool area. We could hardly believe it. Stones from the slopes of Merapi, carved with traditional tools, would cross seas and oceans to reach the Middle East. But that is what happened. We shipped that order in dozens of containers. And to this day, that hotel still stands majestically, with stone floors from our hands inside it.

Until now. We have spent decades grappling with the dust of Merapi. Our workshop is no longer just a thatched roof. We have machine saws to cut large stone blocks into more manageable sizes. We have lifting equipment to move heavy stones without injuring the craftsmen’s backs. But one thing has never changed: the final touch remains manual. Machines cannot replace human hands in this one matter. Why? Because machines cannot feel. Machines do not know which part of the stone is too brittle. Machines cannot detect micro cracks that are only felt when the chisel strikes the stone’s surface at a certain angle.
Only hands that have been trained for decades can do that. Only eyes that have seen thousands of tons of stone can choose which is worthy of becoming natural rock slabs for an exclusive dining table, and which is better suited to become natural stone edging for a garden wall. Only craftsmen understand that every stone has its own character. Some stones are hard and stubborn, requiring extra blows. Some are soft and easy to shape, requiring a gentle touch like stroking silk fabric.
In addition to black lava stone, we also process authentic Sukabumi green natural stone tiles which are very famous internationally. This green stone has unique characteristics. Its color is like moss wet with dew. Its texture is smooth yet still anti slip. It is very suitable for swimming pool waterlines and spa areas. We also produce Paras Palimanan stone tiles and Breksi natural stone tiles which are favorites for modern tropical design.
Other products that are no less popular are authentic Merapi stone sinks and black basalt stone sinks. Each sink is carved directly from a solid block of stone, not from leftover pieces. The process takes up to three days for a single sink. But the results are worth it. These sinks not only function as a place to wash but also become a focal point in the bathroom. Guests who visit will ask, “This sink is so beautiful. Where did you buy it?” And you will answer with pride, “This is handmade from Watu Candi.”
A Special Touch: Batik on Stone
One of the most proud innovations is the birth of Yogyakarta batik green stone tiles. This idea came from a long discussion with an interior designer who wanted to combine local wisdom with natural materials. “Why don’t we carve batik motifs onto stone?” he suggested. At first we were doubtful. Carving stone is already difficult. Carving a complex motif like batik? Almost impossible. But we tried. We learned. We failed many times. Until finally, after months of experimentation, we succeeded in creating a special technique to carve batik motifs onto the surface of green Sukabumi stone.
The results were extraordinary. Green stone with batik motifs became a highly sought after product. Not only by domestic collectors, but also by the Indonesian diaspora overseas who long for the culture of their homeland. Every sheet of this batik tile is a rare work of art. The motifs cannot be mass produced. They must be carved one by one by craftsmen we have specially trained. Only a few can do it. And because of that limitation, this product becomes exclusive. Not everyone can own it.
